Gray Gulls Program

Overview: Cape Air’s “Gray Gulls” program is designed to give the opportunity for experienced pilots to continue flying scheduled air service after the age of 65.  Being primarily a CFR Part 135 scheduled air carrier, age is not a factor, only the ability to maintain a First Class Medical.  Currently, we have retired pilots flying for us from almost every major carrier!  We have two ways you can join our Gray Gulls program to keep your flying career active:

Full-Time: You would bid on your base by seniority with the potential to be in any one of our 29 pilot bases.  You would most likely work a 4-on 3-off schedule (minimum 12 days off per 28) of about 40+ hours a week with overtime available.

Part-Time: Cape Air lists bases where part time pilots are required.  You would be scheduled in advance in your base for less than 30 hours per week.  This status can be held seasonally in some bases as well.  (You are on the seniority list for your first year; you will qualify for CASS privileges but dependent on your hours worked you may or may not qualify for certain company benefits.)

In all scenarios you would be responsible for housing in your base.  However, if asked to help out elsewhere in our network (TDY) and you accept, a hotel room and per diem would be provided to you.

Training is accomplished in Hyannis, MA and lasts approximately 4-6 weeks.  During training you are provided a single occupancy hotel room and paid a minimum of 40 hours per week.

Internal Gateway Program

The Internal Gateway Program was established to offer support to Cape Air employees who desire to pursue careers as professional pilots.

An eligible employee is someone who for reasons beyond his/her control has had to discontinue their flight training. Employees interested in joining the Internal Gateway Program must meet the following requirements to be eligible to interview for the Program:

  • Be a full-time, 40-hour weekly employee in good standing for at least one year

  • Eligible to work in US

  • Valid U.S. Passport

  • Receive a favorable recommendation from your manager or supervisor

  • Complete the First Officer - Internal Gateway Application in ADP

  • Successfully complete a Cape Air pilot interview

  • Possess a FAA issued Private Pilot Certificate with Instrument privileges or higher

  • Sign a promissory note regarding your time and financial commitment to Cape Air

As part of the application review process, employee records will be reviewed with Human Resources. Review of records will include action forms, attendance, customer feedback, as well as a 360 evaluation. 360 evaluations are surveys which will be sent to the applicant’s supervisor, manager, direct colleagues, pilots located in the same region, and others who have had experience working with the applicant. These evaluations measure communication, attitude, customer focus, problem solving abilities, teamwork, and professionalism.

If you meet the Internal Gateway criteria listed above and are interested in applying for this opportunity, please complete the First Officer - Internal Gateway Application, in the ADP Career Center. The application window will open as needed. Please monitor company emails (i.e. Monthly MOCHA Messenger) to be notified when the application window is open.

Once an employee is enrolled in the Internal Gateway Program he/she must successfully complete each of the following phases on an agreed upon timeline.

  • Phase One: Submit letters of recommendation along with a completed Internal Gateway application and Pilot Interview and be officially accepted into the program. Create a plan and timeline to qualify the employee as a Cape Air crew member. This timeline will be based on the employee’s experience and the number of certificates and ratings required. Phase 1 will be complete when the employee is ready for employment as a pilot for Cape Air (requisite certificates and ratings). Class dates will be awarded at Cape Air’s discretion and will vary depending on capacity, operational demand, and other factors.

  • Phase Two: Successfully complete Cape Air initial pilot training, including ground school, flight training, appropriate check ride and initial operating experience.

  • Phase Three: Accumulate the requisite flight time. Successfully complete PIC upgrade training and check-ride.

  • Phase Four: Accumulate the requisite flight time. Successfully complete ATP upgrade training, check ride and initial operating experience.

  • Phase Five: Complete time commitment as stated in signed promissory note as a Captain with Cape Air. Participants will be required to communicate with the Internal Gateway Lead regularly regarding their progress through each phase.
